...I'm unsettled by the sight and smell of so much roasted beef and bone.... I brought with from Canada a folio of good paper and a brush... well, just part of the brush (I pulled off the handle so it would fit into a pencil case.) And a couple of aquarelle crayons. But no paint.
So down I came to the cafe, asking for an espresso. Earlier in the day I had requested a decaf latte and the waitress wanted to know "Decaff again?" When I replied, “It doesn’t matter but make it black”, she knew something was up.
She delivered the small espresso cup to the table on which I had spread out a sheet of paper, and my brush. I plunged the brush into the hot espresso and started to paint. She froze in place as her eyes darted from the splashing espresso to the plate of complimentary biscotti she had so generously brought with… (don’t worry, I ate them!)
