EARLY WORK

These coffee on mylar paintings were done in the winter of 2009 and they are the bridge between the earlier Argentina coffee paintings (summer 2008) and my more recent black pencil on paper studies (2009-10). The link between the two bodies of work is my interest in the “sense giving” and “sense receiving” nature of drawn and painted imagery.

“Sense giving” fragments act like punctuation in grammar. “Sense receiving” passages find their narrative meaning through the punctuating or form defining “sense giving” fragments. I'm fascinated by how few of these explanatory details are required to give an image meaning. In my films Slide and Profile there are several scenes in which the “sense giving” and “sense receiving” nature of the imagery is apparent.
